The Effect Of Methanol Extrac I Of Aristolochia Alb1da On Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Albino Rats:- Ihueze, Praise

ABSTRACT ix This study was designed to investigate the effect of methanol extract of Arisiolochia atbida leaves on alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats weighing between 108-120g, given intraperitoneal . injection of alloxan 120mg per kg body weight. After 7 days, the blood glucose levels of the animals were checked to ascertain a diabetic state The diabetic ones were used for the study. The rats were placed into 5 groups of which group 1 was the normal control and the rats were given feed and water onlv Group 2 was the negative control, induced with alloxan, no treatment. Group 3 was the positive (standard) control, induced with alloxan, and treated with glibeclamide (standard drug). Groups 4 and 5 were induced using alloxan and treated with the plant extract at doses of 50mg/kg and lOOmg'kg respectively Results from the study showed a dose-dependent increase in the level of HDL, which was significantly different (p<0.05) between control groups (normal, negative and positive) and lOOmg'kg ofthe plant extract, while there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the control group and 50mg/kg of plant extract. The significant difference (p<0.05) between the control groups (normal, negative and positive control) and the plant extract showed that the plant extract was able to reduce the level of LDL in the rat which could reduce the risk of heart disease. The results also showed a significant difference (p<0 05) between the control groups (normal, negative and positive control) and plant extract (50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg) in triacygiycerol and urea level of the rats Result showed significant difference (p<0.05) between control groups (normal, negative and positive) and plant extract (50mg/kg and lOOmg'kg) in blood glucose level ofthe rats
