The Antidiabetic And Anti Bacterial Effect Of Gongronema Latifoliumethanolic Leaf Extracts On Albino Rats.

For the antidiahetie screening four rats W assigned to each groups. group one to group seven, the rats in each group was given 2m1 once a day for two weeks. of 500. 250, 125. 62, 31mg ml of the extract, chiorihinase ( for positive control) and normal saline ( for negative control) respectively. Blood glucose level was measured at intervals b) tiil taping using glucometer, The results obtained were subjected to one-waY ANOVA at p<0.OS level of significance. When compared with the negative control, the glucose levels decreased significantly (p<O.05) in rats that received 500, 250, and 125mg/mi of extract. The lowering of blood glucose levels \vas insignificant (p>O.05) in rats given 62 and 31mg/nil of the extract. The antidiabctic effect of the extract was dose dependent. The activity of the leaf' extract against six clinical bacterial isolates S. aiireiis, S. pneumonia. E. co/i. P. in/mb//is, P. aerugi/705a salmonella spp was determined using agar diffusion technique.The ethanol leaf extract demonstrated significant (p< 0.05) activity against the test organisms. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the leaf extract ranges from 8 - 19g/ml and were found to be concentration dependent the lowest concentration 3 1 mg/nil did not inhibit any of the bacteria. This study confirms that Gongi'onemna /atifoliumn has antibacterial and antidiabetjc efficacy.
