The Antibacterial Effect Of Honey On Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus From Children Of Primary School Age, Umuariaga In Ikwuano L.G.A

ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial property of honey was tested against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus afres (MRSA) isolates from children of primary school age from Umuariaga, Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State. Various concentrations of honey (25%, 50% and 100%) was used to test for antimicrobial activity against 56 MRSA isolates. The diameter zone of inhibition of the 25% concentration ranged between 0mm (no inhibition) to 8mm. while the range was between 7mm to 9mm in the 50% concentration and between 12mm to 14mm in 100% concentration. Seven (12.5%) showed resistance to the 25% honey while the 50% and the 100% concentration showed no resistance rather the zones Of inhibition increased with increase in concentration. The above result showed the effectiveness of honey as an alternative therapeutic agent in the treatment of MRSA infections.
