Statistical Analysis Of The Factors Affecting The Interest Of Secondary School Students In Sciences (A Case Study Of Ikwuano Local Governm Ent Area Of Abia State):- onyinyechi Uma

ABSTRACT

The study is aimed at determining statistically whether the interest of students in sciences in Ikwuano Local Government Area in Abia State depends on the influence of parents, teacher, peer group and learning/teaching material. Community Grammar School, Oloko, Awom na-ebo Secondary Technical School, Comprehensive Secondary School, Ihim lbere and lkwuano Secondary School, Ariam were used as the case study. The SS 1 students of these schools were the target population. Questionnaire was given to a randomly selected sample of these students in the different schools. the contingency analysis using the Chi-square statistic was used to analyse the data received to determine the following; Independence of choice of science on parental influence, independent of choice of science on teachers influence and independence of choice of science on peer group influence. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the parents influence the students in their choice of science subjects. Also the students tend to follow their peers to do science. It was revealed that both teachers and learning materials have little influence on the student's choice of sciences.
