ABSTRACT

Baphia nitida is used in traditional medicine in the Easter part ofNigeria for the treatment of cough, catarrh and other microbial skin infections. The leaves ofthe plant were extracted using standard ethanol, chloroform, n-hexane, pet-ether and methanol to determine the physiochemical properties ofthe plant. The spectral analysis involving IR, HNMR and CNMR, MS, COSY revealed the presence offlavonoids, glycosides, and tannins. The cholinesterase and bacterial inhibitory activities ofthe plants were evaluated due to their local applications. The results revealed that the extracts ofBaphia nitida leaves assessed for acetycholinesterase showed some level ofinhibitory effect depending on the solvent used. The result ofthe bacterial inhabitation showed that among all the test organisms screened, the crude ethanol extract ofBaphia nitidahad promising activity against staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and partial activity against Paidomonasaeroginosa
