Screening, Isolation And Characterization Of Antibiotic Producing Microorganisms From Soil Samples Within Mouau Poultry Farm.

ABSTRACT

Ten samples of soil collected around MOUAU poultry farm were screened for antibiotic producing microorganisms. Ten fold serial dilution of the soil samples was carried out and inoculated on Nutrient Agar and Sabouraud Dextrose Agar using spread plate method. Pure colonies of the isolates were tested against known bacterial pathogens namely: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), Escherichia co/i (ATCC25 922), Staphylococus aureus (ATCC25923) and Mycobactermm smegmatis (ATCC 14468), to observe their antimicrobial activity against the bacterial pathogens. Isolate S22 showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococus aureus with an inhibition zone of 15mm, while the other pathogen were resistant. Isolate Si 01 had clear inhibition zone around the plates inoculated with Stapkvlococus aureus and Escherichia co/i (10mm and 8mm respectively). The other isolates did not produce any inhibition against the test pathogens. The result suggests that potentially antibiotic producing microorganisims can be isolated from the soils of MOUAU. Screening project of large scope is therefore recommended.
