ABSTRACT

This study geared to fit a probability distribution and regression model on the length of stay of patients in the hospital using Michael Okpara University of Agriculture as a case study. Length of stay at a hospital contains important information in health statistics irrespective of the fact whether the patient is insured or not. A longer stay may result in resource restrictions with regard to the availability of beds al hospitals. Some of the determinants of length of stay are the demographic characteristics and hospital characteristics. In this study, Age, sex and types of diseases were considered as determinants of length of stay of patients. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Q-Q plots and OLS regression analysis. The result of analyses showed that the data seem to follow lognormal distribution rather than exponential and gamma distributions. Age, sex and diseases type was not a determining factor of length of stay considering the study area. Hence, a repetitive study using the variables is suggested to be meaningful.
