ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae in pneumonia patients. A total of 60 sputum samples were collected from patients (age 1-65 years) with lower respiratory infections at Madona Hospital, Aba road, Umuahia, Abia State Nigeria. Sputum samples were used for the study. Samples were cultured on blood agar using streak method of inoculation and incubated at 37°C for 48hrs. The test organisms was authenticated using some standard identification methods. Amongst other etiological agents discovered during the work, Streptococcus pneumoniae had the highest frequency of occurrence (33) followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (21). Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates were found most among adult patients (37%) while the least was found from those above 60years of age (11%). 51% of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated from male patients while 49% of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated from female patients. This study shows that frequency of Streptococcus pneumoniae is greater than other pneumonia associated bacteria
