ABSTRACT

 A study of the prevalence of intestinal helminths ir fection was carri d out in General Hospital Awgu, in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, from June-September 2011.Three hundred (300) stool samples were analysed using formol ether concentration technique. Out of th 3 300 samples nalysed, 240(80%) had the intestinal helminths. Parasite species found include Ascads lumbricoides 71(23.7%), Hookworm 103(34.3%), Trichuris trichiura 2(14%), Strongyloides stercolaris 24(8%). The female pa.ients had higher rate of infection 147(84.5%) than their male counter-part 93(73.8). The stud reveals that there is high rate of infection among the little children than he aged children or adults. Children of age group 1-4 yeais (100%) had th : highest infection rate. The rate ofthe infection is high on people whose occupations are business 45(88.2%). People who use pit latrine had the highest infei .ion rate 150(83.8%). The analysis reveals that people tha1 use pond water had the highest rate of infection 72(84.7%). There is a significant association in prevalence based on water sources between and w thin different occupations (fcal=6.42 and 3.87> ftab=3.49). The study reveals chat there is a high rate of the infection in Awgu L.G.A., Enugu State.
