Phytochemicals And Membrane Stabilizing Effect Of Methanol Extracts Of Anonna Nturicata Leaves On Red Blood Cell Membrane Of Wister Rats:- Ako, Linda U

ABSTRACT

The study investigated phytochemical and membrane stabilizing activity Anonma minicata leaf. The phytochemical analysis was carried out using standard drug. The membrane stabilizing activity was studied using rat’s erythrocytes against a standard drug. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of high levels flavonoids, saponins, reducing sugar, phenols, tannins and oxalates, but trace amount ofterpenes, alkaloids, phytate and steroid. The methanol extract ofthe leaves ofAnnona muricata showed that it can stabilize rat erythrocyte membrane against hypotonic induced lyses. It showed a percentage membrane stabilizing effect which ranged between 33.62±0.68 to 81.53±0.84 the result showed a dose dependent effect. The presence of alkaloid, saponins, tannins, flavonoid could be responsible for the membrane stabilizing properties justifying the ethnomedical applications ofAnnona nniricata leaf. Thus, further advance research is necessary to isolate and characterize the chemical compounds responsible for the therapeutic activities ofthe plant.
