ABSTRACT The phytochemical contents of aqueous extract from the seed of Margarilaria discoidea and their effect on Na+,K+ATpase activity, membrane stability and some other contents of the seed indicated the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenols, Tannins, Reducing sugar, Soluble Carbohydrates, Steroids, Cyanogenic Glycosides, Saponins, BCarotene at mean concentrations of 1194±0.03mg/ml, 316±0.01mg/ml, 1153±0.03mg/100mI, 43.6±0.03mg/100ml, 1062±0.03mg/100ml, 378±0.01mg/100ml, 3.49+0.02mg/ml, 1.21±0.04mg/ml, 0.183±0.05mg/ml and 0.66±0.19mg/ml respectively. Oral administration ofthe aqueous seed extract to rats at 25, 50,100, and 200mg/kg body weight resulted in significant (P<0.05) decrease in serum electrolytes (Na, K, Ca, Cl, HCO3') and Na+,K+'ATPase activity. A significant (P<0.05) dose dependent increase in red blood cell membrane when compared with The result showed that the seed extract contain bioactive membrane stabilizing effect on Mice was found to be 316.2mg/kg body weight using analysis of measure of mortality. biochemical parameters were investigated in rats. Analysis for the phylochcmical components that exerts physiological effects but could be toxic if not consumed in a controlled manner.
