ABSTRACT This study was aimed at evaluating the biochemical effect of insecticide on diabetic Wistar rats. A total of sixteen (16) adult Wistar rats were used for this study. They were acclimatized for a period of one week and fed Vital growers mash and water ad libitum after which they were grouped into four equal groups. Group one was the normal control, group 2 was exposed to diabetes and exposed to insecticide while groups 3 and 4 were diabetic (non-exposed) and non-diabetic (exposed to insecticide), respectively. The exposure to insecticide lasted for a period of two (2) weeks after which they were sacrificed and blood collected vi cardiac puncture. Blood sample for haematological test was collected in EDTA bottle while that for biochemistry tests was collected in a plain tube, separated and the sera used for the assays. The results show that malondialdehyde (MDA) was significantly (p<0.05) increased in the diabetic and exposed group when compared with other groups while superoxide dismutase (SOD) was insignificantly (p>0.05) affected in all test groups. Total protein and haemoglobin showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the non-diabetic (exposed to insecticide) when compared with the normal control. This points to the fact that exposure to insecticide is highly detrimental to human health and should therefore be avoided.
