Microbiological And Physicochemical Analysis Of Borehole Water Sources In Okpuala Umugwor Autonomous Community, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, Abia State :- Osinachi, Comfort N

ABSTRACT

 The Microbiological and Physicochemical Characteristics of ten borehole water in Okpuala Umugwor in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State were carried out. The mean of the microorganisms ranged from, Total aerobic bacterial plate count, 1.00(±0.01) x 104cfu/ml -2.30 (± 0.08) x 104 efu/mi. Fungal Count, 1.0(±0.03) x 102 cfu/ml- '1.6 (±0.03) x 102 cfu/ml. The Microorganisms isolated were, Escherichia Coli, Enterobacter species, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus species. Streptococcus, Bacillus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Saccharomyces speices, Aspergillus species and Penicillium species. The mean values of the physicochemical characteristics ranged from pH 6.95 ± 0.01- 7.03 ± 0.01. Temperature 28.2 ± 0.01°C, Conductivity 32.20 ± 0.01 — 56.80 ± O.Olms/cm, Turbidity 0.10 ± 0.10 NTU, Total dissolved Solids 16.30 ± O.lOmg/L, Dissolved Oxygen 4.0 ± 0.00 - 6.0 ± O.OOmg/. Biochemical Oxygen Demand 0.40 ± 0.00- 0.8 ± O.lOmg/L, COD 0.90 ± 0.00 - 1.30 ± 0.00, Sodium 1.21 ± 0.01- 0.9 ± O.OOmg/L. Potassium 0.53 ± 0.01- 3.02 ± O.OOmg/L while the taste was unobjectionable. The result showed that the water supplies from these boreholes must be treated before Consumption because they are contaminated with microorganisms like Esherichia coli and others found as a result ofthis project research.
