ABSTRACT xi This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of malaria infection on serum lipid profile, kidney and liver function parameters in malaria infected patients in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. Blood samples were taken from 30 symptomatic malaria patients and 30from asymptomatic malaria patients at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia between January and April, 2015. Biochemical analyses were carried out using standard methods. Result for lipid profile from the study showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in cholesterol, HDL and LDL in the symptomatic group (121.94+1.07, 25.34+3.81 and 45.73+1.43) when compared to the asymptomatic or the control group (asymptomatic) (116.58±0.95, 23.91±3.87 and 40.37±1.78). Result for liver function test showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in AST, ALT, ALP, Total Bilirubin and Conjugated Bilirubin in the symptomatic group (12.34+0.20, 11.50+0.65, 25.34+3.81, 1.03+0.16, 0.18+0.04) when compared to the control group (asymptomatic) (8.84+9.74, 4.90+0.60, 23.91+3.87, 0.48+0.10 and 0.15+0.25). Result for kidney function test showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in urea and creatinine concentration in the symptomatic group (31.40+4.92 and 1.28+0.14) when compared to the control (17.63+2.16 and 0.92+1.31). Also, there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in the sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate concentration in the symptomatic group (133.10+3.67, 3.40+0.29, 92.67+1.90 and 19.93+1.55) when compared to the control group (139.80+1.97, 3.92+0.25, 100.97+3.12 and 23.70+1.29). The observed changes were labeled to the adverse effects of the malaria parasite, this study suggests that malaria parasites could be responsible for derangement of kidney and liver functions in patients and could therefore contribute to organ damage in affected individuals ifnot treated.
