ABSTRACT

Biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic materials. Nowadays, this technology is increasingly used worldwide and related research activities are of growing importance. A likely explanation for this rapid expansion is the multi-functional nature ofthe technology (Weiland, 2010). It's function include (1) Renewable energy production; methane, the main component of biogas, can be used as an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels, either by direct combustion to generate heat and electricity or though upgrading to be used as vehicle fuel or injected into gas grid; (2) Waste management; the AD technology provides a method ofstabilization of a variety of organic Waste functions; and (3) production of an organic fertilizer; during the degradation process, nutrients in the organic Waste are retained in the residue (digester), which can be use as fertilizer on agricultural land, which reduces the need for mineral fertilizer and thus the associated use offossil energy in mineral fertilizer manufacture.
