ABSTRACT x Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease whereby the glucose level in the body is high as a result of the pancreas not being able to secrete enough insulin needed to regulate the blood sugar level because of loss of beta cells. This study was aimed at investigating the hepatic and nephrontoxicity of mosquito coil smoke on diabetic Wistar rats. A total sum oftwenty Wistar rats were used for this experiment. The first group was the normal control, they were neither induced with alloxan nor exposed to mosquito coil smoke, the second group was diabetic control, and they were not exposed to mosquito coil smoke, the third group was the diabetic and exposed to mosquito coil smoke, while the fourth group was normal and exposed to mosquito coil smoke. The exposure lasted for a period of 21 days after which the animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and blood collected via cardiac puncture. The blood samples were centrifuged and the sera collected for biochemical assays using standard methods. Results were analyzed using SPSS vs. 22 and significance was accepted at p<0.05. From the results, it was observed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration of the diabetic exposed to mosquito coil smoke had a significant increase (p<0.05) when compared with the normal control and other groups. The glucose level of the diabetic exposed to mosquito coil shows a significant increase (p<0.05) when compared with normal control and a non-significant difference (p>0.05) when compared with the other groups. The catalase level of the diabetic exposed to mosquito coil showed a significant increase (p<0.05) when compared with normal control and non-diabetic exposed to mosquito coil and a significant decrease (p<0.05) when compared with diabetic non-exposed to mosquito coil. The ALT level showed a significant increase (p<0.05) when compared with normal control and diabetic non-exposed to mosquito coil but a non-significant increase (p>0.05) when compared to the non-diabetic exposed to mosquito coil. From this research, it can be inferred that exposure of diabetic and non-diabetic individuals to mosquito coil smoke is detrimental to health.
