ABSTRACT

This work evaluates the effect of HC1-soaked mushroom bunch on vitamins of wistar albino rats. A total of 24 female wistar albino rats of weight range were obtained from the Veterinary Department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and allowed to acclimatize for a period of one week. The animals were divided into 6 groups (n=4). Group 1 = control (Only feed + water) ad libitum, group 2: mushroom grown on 0.1 % HC1-soaked palm oil bunch, group 3: mushroom grown on 0.2 % HC1-soaked palm oil bunch, group 4: mushroom grown on 0.3% HC1-soaked palm oil bunch, group 5: mushroom grown on 0.4 % HC1-soaked palm oil bunch, group 6: mushroom grown on 0.5 % HC1-soaked palm oil bunch. The administrations were done for 3 weeks and blood samples were collected at the end of the 3rd week intervals and used for biochemical assay using standard methods. Results of vitamin C and E showed a significant (p<O.05) decrease in vitamin C and a significant (p<O.05) increase in some treated groups when compared with the control. Thus, mushroom grown on HC1-soaked palm oil bunch should be subjected to other analysis for further confirmatory tests.
