ABSTRACT X The medicinal value of plants has assumed a more important dimension in the past decades owing largely to the discovery that Extract from plants contains not only minerals and primary metabolites but also Secondary metabolites with vast phamacological potential which are use as an Anti-diabetic, Anti-Inflanimation, Anti-cancer, Anti-diarrheal, Anti-oxidant, Anti-cancer etc an example ofsuch plant is Combretum dolichopetalum The objectives of this work is to detennine the phytochemical constituent and the Anti-inflammatory activity of methanolic root extract of C.dolichopetalum and its effects in some bood components, using wistar albino rats. The preliminary Phytochemical screening (mg/lOOg) revealed that the plant Root contains Flavonoid (2.87 ±.0.05), Alkaloid (4.17±.O1), Sterol (1.24±.0.01), Tannin (1.69 ±.0.01), HCN (4.06 ±.0.00), Phenol (0.78 ±.0.00) and Anthraquinone (0.59 ±. 0.01). Hemoglobin, Red blood cell and packed cell volume indicated a non significant (p>0.05) effect, while there was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in White blood cell in the extract administered groups. Anti-Inflammatory activity of the plant was at a dose-dependent manner and was significantly (p<0.05) increased in the high dose group. The findings for this study provide evidence that the methanolic root extract of this tested plant contains phytochemicals which are needed by the body in fighting microbes and also possess hematological activity, though not significant and Anti-Inflammatory effects in a dose-dependent manner.
