ABSTRACT
The research was aimed at determining the level of awareness ofhomemakers on the production ofhousehold items using old clothes for renovation and family sustainability in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. In the cause of the research, four purposes and research questions were formulated. The survey research design was adopted of which data were sourced primarily through questionnaire. Questionnaire was distributed to 120 staffs of MOUAU, which 100 was completely filled and returned by the respondents and was later gathered back by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics where mean and standard deviation were used for decision making. The result ofthe analysis revealed that homemakers are aware ofthe production ofhousehold items 2.97, inadequate information on benefits ofrenovation of cloths 2.78, Limited funds 2.89, environmental challenges 3.11 and inadequate recycling instrument 2.89 were the challenges of homemakers on production of household items using old cloths for family sustainability, adoption of the 3Rs 2.72, refashioning of the clothes 3.27, swapping the clothes 3.15, patching and mending 3.07, were the strategies adopted for improving the production of household items using old clothes for renovation and family sustainability. Bags 2.94 and other items were accepted as items produced using old clothes/ material. Study concluded that in a bid to have a sustainable family and a healthy environment, there is need to adopt the 3Rs for family sustainability. The research recommended among others that there is need for students, businessmen, families and indeed the general public on the benefits of producing household items using old clothes for family economic and environmental sustainability.
