Hepatoprotective Activity Of Combretumdelichopetalum (Bush Willow) Leaf Extract Against Paracetamol Induced Toxicity In Rats:- Ezugwu Ukamaka .J

Abstract x Effect ofthe doses ofmethanolic leaf extract of Combretum dolichopetalum against paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity was studied in male albino Wister rats. Result indicates elevated significant (p<0.05) value greater than the normal and positive control for Alanine aminotransferase with mean values 81.00 ± 1.53 and 75.67± 2.60 respectively and also, significantly (p<0.05) less than the negative control (119.00± 0.58). at different doses of 200mg/kg and 300mg/kg, Aspartate aminotransferase with mean values 173.001 2.08 and 166.00± 0.67 respectively was less than the negative control group with significant (p<0.05) and at 500mg/kg, 166.00± 0.57 showed significant (p<0.05) decrease compared to all the control groups. A significant (p<0.05) decrease was observed in Alkaline phosphatase when the three doses of the extract with mean values 41.00 ± 0.57, 33.33± 1.20 and 34.00 ± 1.15 respectively was compared with the control groups (61.33± 0.88, 55.67 ± 1.20 and 68.00 ± 1.52). However, in the urea level the 200mg/kg had no effect when compared with the normal and positive control 33.33 ± 1.20, and 52.33 ± 1.52 respectively the 300mg/kg had no effect on the normal and positive control group and was significantly (p<0.05) lower than the negative control group. Creatinine at 200mg/kg with mean value 1.18 ± 0.02 was significantly (p<0.05) greater than the normal and positive control groups 1.04 ± 0.02 and 1.03 ± 0.25 respectively but less than the mean value ofthe negative control group 1.13 ± 0.01 which appeared significant(p<0.05). The study was also supported by histopathology ofthe liver sections. The present study revealed that the methanolic leaf extract of Combretum dolichopetalum has a hepatoprotective principle on paracetamol induced toxicity.
