ABSTRACT xii In our present day where junk food is almost an unavoidable part of over 90% of the world population’s daily food consumption, the high intake of potassium bromate in these food • substances continue to pose the challenge- of terminal diseases which affect both children and adults. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Telfairia occidentalis extract on hematological changes and lipid profile parameters in potassium bromate intoxicated rats. Male albino rats were divided into five groups: control, potassium bromate, Telfairia occidentalis, and potassium bromate + Telfairia occidentalis. Results showed that the extract significantly (p<0.05) lowered total cholesterol, LDL-c and VLDL when compared to the control group and increased Hb, RBC, and HDL-c levels. The findings suggest that Telfairia occidentalis extract may have protective effects on cardiovascular health and blood cell production in rats exposed to potassium bromate. It is also worth considering that this study was conducted on rats, and the findings may not necessarily translate to humans. Therefore, it is important to conduct further studies on human subjects to determine the safety and effectiveness of Telfairia occidentalis extract for the treatment of potassium bromate-induced hematological changes and lipid profile disturbances before making any recommendations for clinical use.
