Hematological And Histopathological Effect On Rats Fed With Aerial Yam Dioscorea Bulbiferia, Tuber

ABSTRACT

The haematological and histopathological effect on rats treated with aerial yam were studied, result obtained revealed the presence of anti nutritional factor such as tannin, phenol, saponin, hydrocyanmn in Dioscorea bulbiferia but in quantity not significantly enough to induced toxicity when consumed moderately. All rats treated with Dioscorea bulbferia did not show any sign of haematoxicity as the Red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin concentrate (HB) and pack cell volume (PCV) of rats treated with 30% of Dioscorea Bulbfera and 70% of feed stood 5.72 ±0.94, 9.84 ±0.43 and 30. 80±2.79 and compared favourably with that of control group 5.96 ±0.62, 11.08 tO.55 and 33.40 tl.85 although elevated white blood cell (WBC), values were observed. The histopathological studies also showed no obvious sign of toxicity in all treated groups such as interstiticial, pneumonia, interglobular, tissue necrosis, enlargement of the lviolar signs and shrinking of the glomoruls for the liver lungs and kidney so study. The consumption of aerial yam at very high quantities may presence sign of toxicity due to the presence of anti nutritional factor including tannin, phenol, saponin, hydrocyannin but with moderate consumption no toxicity will be observed as evidence of haematological and histopathological result of this work.
