ABSTRACT
This study investigated the haematological changes in West African Dwarf (WAD) bucks experimentally infected with Trypanosoma uivax and Trypanosoma brucei, each of the Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma uivax groups were eight in number while the control experimental group had five. The clinical records (weight, rectal temperature) for the animals were monitored. The haematological parameters accessed include Packed Cell Volume (PCV), estimation of Haemoglobin (Hb), White and Red Blood Cell count (WBC and RBC), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concemtration (MCHC), were calculated. The WAD bucks in Group A, B, and C in the pre infective, infective and treatment stage in the course of this experiment ranged for Hb (9.12-7.66,8.6-6.5, 9.3-8.0) in the pre infective stage (8.60-6.44,7.6-4.3,8.5-7.5) in the infective stage and (9.0-8.3, 8.0-5.5,10.2-7.4) in the treatment stage for group C,A, and B respectively. All other parameters monitored are given appropriately. The etiology of the infection for Trypanosoma uivax and Trypanosoma brucei was acute and chronic respectively. The infection was more severe in Trypanosoma uivax than in Trypanosoma brucei. Knowing that the WAD bucks are trypanotolerant however, the effect of the parasite on the haematological features have been elucidated thus in cases where the animals are infected adequate dietary measures need be taken to ensure productivity is not hindered.
