ABSTRACT
Black and brown variety of common bean grown on dump site soil with different percentages (0%,25%,50%,75% and 100%) were compared in growth measurement, reproductive parameter, proximate composition and anti- nutritional factors. The growth measurement of both the black and brown variety showed no much difference after two weeks but increased rapidly on the sixth and tenth week with a higher increase in the brown variety than the black variety and the black variety produced a greater number of pods than the brown variety. The proximate analysis in 'mg/g' of the black variety contained more Carbohydrate (18.25±0.24 to 26.13±0.42 ), Fat (8.01±0.07 to 24.03±0.21) and Protein (29.05±1.53 to 29.92±0.18) while the brown contained less carbohydrate (20.20±0.20 to 22.24±0.22), Fat (8.98±0.17 to 15.76±0.62) and Protein (27.65±0.15 to 29.92±0.18) in 'mg/g'. The anti-nutritional factors in 'mg/g' for both the black and brown variety include; Hydrogen cyanide (23.05±0.05 to 26.02±0.02), Tannin (0.34±0.00 to 0.43±0.00), Trypsin inhibitor (1.85±0.01 to 1.98±0.02) whose values increased as the proportion of the dump site soil increased, Oxalate (0.08±0.01 to 0.18±0.01) and Phytate (0.32±0.00 to 0.34±0.0 1) with a linear increase in dump site soil and this indicates that the dump site soil caused an increase in the phytate content of the sample.
