ABSTRACT
Studies on growing Plerotus ostreatus mushroom on beans straw, Acacia (Auriculiformis,) pod, PaSpaILrn (Notatum) grass and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) pod have been carried out. The culture medium used was Malt extract Agar (MEA) which was prepared according to the standard laboratory practices Millet (Pennisetum typhoideum) grains were used for the preparation of spawn. Bagged bulk substrate were pasteurized by steam, inoculated at 5% spawn and incubated at room temperature for three weeks before primordia emerged and developed into fruithodies. Paspaium grass substrate gave the highest yield while groundnut pods gave the lowest yield. Acacia pods did not fructify at all probably due to contamination. There were significant differences between the numbers while there were no significant differences between the weights of fruitbodies harvested. And it is been recommended in this work that the use of Paspalum grass a waste resulting from lawn mowing should be further investigated especially with regard to supplementation with a view to adopting it in commercial production of Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom.
