Giardiasis In Children From Selected Schools In Obingwa L.G.A, Abia State. Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted from may to September 2005 on giardiasis in children from selected schools in Obingwa L.G.A; Abia state. A total of 600 school children (300 males and 300 females) aged between 5 and 16 years in 3 randomly selected primary schools in 3 communities were studied. Examination was done using direct microscopy. Out of the total 17 children were infected with prevalence of 2.83%. The age groups 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14-16 years recorded low prevalence's of 3.5/o, 3.3%, 2.1% and 0°i respectively. Infection was highest among the pupils that used water closet system than those that used nearby bush and pit latrine. Also the highest prevalence by school was recorded in Amaise Community Primary School Ukpakiri (4.0%).
