Gastrointestinal Helminths of Goats sold at ' the Umuahia North Local Government Area of Umuahia (Afara), Abia State, Nigeria:- Nwanedo Annette E.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth parasites of goats was studied in Umuahia North Local Government Area (Afara) at the Goat Market in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. A total of 100 faecal samples from 100 different adult goats were examined microsopically. Out of 100 animals examined, 87 (87%) were infected. The helminth group and parasites P encountered were nematodes 81 (93.1%) and trematodes 6 (6.9%). The .parasites isolated were Strongyloides papillosus, Gongylonema pulchrum, Fascioloides magna, Marshallagia marshalli, Oesophagostomum columbiannum, Ostertagia circumcincta, Chabertia ovina, Trichuris globulosa, Fasciola gigantica, Trichostrongylus spp, Cotylophoron cotylophorum, Dicrocoelium dndriticum and Skirabinema ovis. Strongyloides papillosus had the b:ghest overall prevalence rate of 74.7% followed by Ostertagia circumcincta with 21.8% prevalence. Mixed infections were encountered in 48 :,55.2%) of the 100 goats examined.
