ABSTRACT

The chemical composition and antimicrobial potentials of Buc/thol::a coriacease were investigated. The chemical composition showed absence of antinutritional factors such as alkaloids. oxalates. cyanogenic glvcosides and nitrates. Its antimicrobial activities were observed to inhibit such test organisms as Esc/ierichia co/i, Bacillus sub/i/is, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureu.r and Ca,u/ida albicans. I-lovcvcr. it is ineffective against Aspergillus niger. The antimicrobial effect was attributed to its steroid constituents such as saponins. -sitosterol and Cyclooctasuiphur which were known to posses antimicrobial potentials. Bucchol:ia coriaccae seed was observed to be rich in minerals such as magnesium.
