Evaluation Of The Antidiabetic Activity Of Quail Eggs On Alloxan Induced Diabetic Wistar Albino Rats:- Wilson, Goodness O

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the antidiabetic activity of quail egg on glycemic index on alloxaninduced diabetic rats. Twenty adult male wistar albino rats serving as the experimental animals were assigned to 5 groups of 4 rats per group. Group 1, Groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were made diabetic by single intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg/kg alloxan monohydrate. Upon establishment of diabetes (fasting blood glucose levels above 126 mg/dl), the rats in groups 3, 4 and 5 were respectively administered with 0.5, 1, and 1.5 ml of quail egg orally daily for 14 days. Groups 1 (negative control) were the untreated group, and group 2 (positive control) received standard drug (methformin) and distilled water. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels ofthe rats were assessed 0 day, 7 days, and 14 days post treatment. Results indicate that administration of quail egg (egg albumin and yolk) at the volume of 0.5 ml to the diabetic rats significantly (p< 0.05) reduced the FBG from 366.00 to 76.00 mg/dl on day 14 post treatment. There was also a significant (p< 0.01) reduction in the mean values ofthe 1.5 ml-treated groups compared to the negative control group. The acute toxicity (LD50) test shows that the egg is relatively safe with little or no physiological adverse effect. The overall result shows that quail egg especially at the volume level of 1.5 ml possesses antidiabetic property and is effectiveness is volume dependent.
