ABSTRACT 0 xii High cholesterol concentration is the major cause of cardiovascular related diseases causing cardiovascular related death globally. A common disease cause by cholesterol deposition in the blood vessels is atherosclerosis. The aim ofthis project is to evaluate the potentials of vemonia amygdalina on managing fat accumulation. A standard known drug “Orlistal” known for fat reduction, served as a standard. 20 female wistar rats were grouped into five groups each group having 4 rats. Groups 2-5 where fed with high fat diet, while group 1 was fed with basal diet, daily. Group 3 was administered with low dose (lOOmg/kg) of butanol extract of veronnia amygdalina, while, group 4 was administered high dose (200mg/kg), (orally) for both groups. Group 5 was administered was orilistat - all groups on daily basis. Blood sample was collected from 3 rates from each groups, to evaluate their lipid profile. Result showed that group 1 and 2 has high cholesterol level in their blood stream, while groups 3 and 4 treated with VA have considerable low cholesterol in their blood stream. The result showed that VA have pharmacological potential in high cholesterol management.
