ABSTRACT viii The effect of justicia camea ethanol leaf extract on phospholipase Aj and prostaglandin synthase were analyzed to determine its effect on platelet aggregation. The leaf extracts ofJusticia camea was prepared by soxhlet extraction method and concentrated at 40°C using hot air oven. The absorbance and %inhibition of the concentrated ethanol extracts on prostaglandin synthase and phospholipase A2 were determined. The result for its effect on prostaglandin synthase activity showed a %inhibition of 14.28, 35.71, 41.43, 57.14 and 85.7 for the plant extract at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5mg/ml respectively. The result for its effect on phospalipase A2 activity showed a %inhibition of 12, 40, 83.2, 92 and 94.4 for the plant extract at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5mg/ml respectively. The result showed that the ethanol extract of Justicia camea significantly inhibited prostaglandin synthase and phosphalipase A2 in a concentration dependent fashion, indicating that it can have a significant effect in slowing platelet aggregation and blood clot formation. There is need for identification and isolation of these phytocompounds responsible for these inhibitory effects.
