ABSTRACT ix Medical and folklore reports suggest that Eugenia uniflora is a functional plant that contains numerous compounds in its composition that has been used to prevent and cure several diseases, such as hypertension and arthritis. In this present study the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and diuretic activity of the ethanol leaf extract of Eugenia uniflora was evaluated. Healthy wister albino rats weighing between 80- 100g was used to determine the anti-inflammatory', analgesic and diuretic activity of E. uniflora. The antioxidant activity was assessed using various inviiro systems such as DPPH scavenging activity and anti-lipid peroxidation activity and nitric oxide scavenging activity. Hot plate method was used to evaluate the analgesic activity', the antiinflammation effect was evaluated in acute inflammation model using egg albumin to induce the inflammation. The diuretic activity was evaluated by measuring urine volume, sodium and potassium concentration was determined using flame photometric methods, chlorine and bicarbonate concentration was determined using titration methods, Comparison was made between control and the different concentrations of the extract which includes 2000mg/ml, lOOOmg/ml, 500mg/ml, 250mg/ml and 125mg/ml. the results revealed that ethanol leave extract of E. uniflora exerted antioxidant activity in a concentration dependent manner, it scavenged DPPH radical by (77.9±2.89)%, Nitric oxide radical by (67.8 ±3.51)% and lipid peroxidation by (72.7±6.41)% at a concentration of 200mg/ml which is the maximum concentration, results also showed maximum significant reduction in paw volume (p<0.05) at 60,120 and 180 minutes (29.0±1.41, 27.5±0.71 and 23.5±0.71)mm at 2000mg/kg similarly maximum significant inhibition of pain was observed after 60 minutes (2.1±0.25) with a dose of 500mg/kg when compared to the negative control. Volume of urine and electrolyte (Na+, CP and K+) concentration was increased significantly when compared to the normal control, but HCOa’ did not show much significant increase in concentration. The result clearly indicate that the ethanol leaf extract of Eugenia uniflora exhibit anti-inflammatory, analgesic and diuretic activity it also shows that the extract has the potential to scavenge free radicals.
