ABSTRACT

A study of the effect of Trypanosoma brucei brucei on haematological parameters and pathology of internal organs of infected albino rats was conducted in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The rats were divided into 3 groups (A - C) of which group A was used as the control (uninfected). Each group was made of three rats. There was an increase in the total white blood cell (WBC) count and a decrease in the red blood cell .RBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration of all the infected rats, an indication that anaemia had set .n. The gross pathological effects on the internal organs showed enlargement of the spleen (splenomegally) and slight enlargement of the liver (hepatomegally). The heart and kidney appeared anaeinic. From this work Trypanosorna brucei brucei has been shown to be pathogenic in albino rats.
