Effects Of Methanolic Extracts Of Telferia Occidentalis And Amaranthus Hybridus On Antioxidant Parameters Of Aspartame Induced Oxidative Stressed In Wistar Albino Rat :- Okoroafor Stanley K

ABSTRACT x The study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidative effects of the methanolic extracts of Telferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybtidus in aspartame induced oxidatuve stress in the test animals (Wistar albio rat). Twenty five animals of both sex were used and divided into five groups, each group consisting of five animals. The test animals were treated with ( 300mg| kg) of methanolic extracts of Telferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus, one hour after administration of Aspartame ( 40mg|kg). the negative control was administered aspartame only, while the normal control were fed only with normal feed and water. The experimental result of all the test animals for SOD parameter (group 1, treated with Telferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus (3.91± 2.45), gruop2 treated with Telferia occidentalis (6.91± 2.89), and group3, Amaranthus hybridus (5.89± 0.7) all showed a significant (p <0.05) difference when compared with the negative control (1.91 ± 0.53). Result for all the test animals for catalase parameter (group 1, treated with Telferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus (0.69 ± 0.15), Telferia occidentalis (0.87 ± 0.10), and Amaranthus hybridus (0.76 ± 0.17) all showed a significant (p < 0.05) difference when compared with the negative control (0.18 ± 0.05) Result for all the test animals for malondialdetyde parameter (group 1, treated with Teilferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus (0.22 ± 0.05), group 2 Telferia occidentalis (0.42 ± 0.24), and group 3 Amaranthus hybridus (0.54 ± 0.31) all showed a significant ( p< 0.05) dicfference when compared with the negative control. This study shows that aspartame induces oxidative stress in the animals when administered at (40mg|kg). The study also shows that the methanolic extracts of Telferia occidentalis and Amaranthus hybridus exhibits antioxidative oftheir antioxidant contents which includes phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and flavonoids
