ABSTRACT I This research was undertaken to examine the effect of methanol extract ofAnnona senegalensis leaves on the haematological profile of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. I The leaf extract at doses of 50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg was administered orally to rats by gavage. A total of 25 rats were divided into 5 groups: Group 1 as the normal control (normal rats), Group 2 as the negative control (diabetic rats without treatment), Group 3 as the positive control (glibenclamidc), Groups 4 and 5, which received 50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg of the extract respectively. The extract at both 50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg significantly (p<0.05) reduced blood glucose levels with the lOOmg/kg ofthe extract being more effective when compared to the lower dose of 50mg/kg. This means that the hypoglycaemic effect ofthe plant extract is dosedependent. A significant (p<0.05) decrease in MCV and MCH was observed after treating the rats with methanol extract of the plant leaves whereas significant (p<0.05) increases were observed in Hb, RBC, PCV, WBC, serum total protein and serum iron. MCHC showed no significant (p>0.05) difference. From this result, it is concluded that the methanol extract of Annona senegalences leaves has significant hypoglycemic effect and caused good haematological profile in the rats studied. It holds promise as a good medicine for the management of diabetes.
