ABSTRACT ix Diabetes Mellitus is a growing global health concern characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Abelmoschus esculentus seed and pod on red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV) and white blood cell count (WBC) in alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus in Albino rats. Total of 45 rats were used for the study and were grouped into 7 groups of 5 animal each. The results showed significant (p<0.05) increase in RBC count in medium dose and high dose groups with concomitant significant (p<0.05) increase in HB concentration of the medium and low dose group as well. The PCV of the medium dose and the high dose groups where also significant (p<0.05) higher compared to the negative control. The results showed the positive effects of the pod extracts on the blood parameters there by suggesting possible promise as an anti-inflammatory agent by significantly reducing (p<0.05) WBC. These parameters are relevant indicators of diabetes and its complications as RBC, Hb and PCV can reflect anemia, which is commonly associated with diabetes, and elevated WBC count can indicate an increased risk of infections, a common complication of diabetes. This study highlights the potential of Abelmoschus esculentus extract as a therapeutic option for managing diabetes and its related haematological abnormalities.
