ABSTRACT ix This study was designed to investigate the modulator effect of water melon seed oil extract in improving oral glucose tolerance and, by extension are useful in the management ofdiabetes. From this study, blood glucose concentration in rats administered 800mg/kg of water melon peaked at Omins and 30mins for the first and second week respectively and has a significant level of(p<0.05) over its 1200mg/kg counterpart for both the first and second week. Those fed with 1200mg/kg of water melon extract peaked at 15mins and Omins for the first and second week respectively although the ANOVA results were positive but not significant. Also the olive oil extract of 800mg/kg peaked at 15mins for both first and second week respectively although the result was positive but not statistically significant. While the 1200mg/kg extract peaked at Omins and 15mins respectively for first and second week although the result was not significant at p<0.05. From the results ofthis study we can conclude that both water melon and olive oil has positive modulator effect on oral glucose tolerance in rats. Thus indicating that both plant extracts may have compounds that has anti-diabetic properties.
