ABSTRACT

The phytochemical content of Annona muricata leaves and the effect of methanol extract on antioxidant enzymes were investigated using standard methods. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannin, alkaloids and terpenes. The acute toxicity result was estimated at 5000mg/kg bwt of extract which showed high level of safety. Progressive weight gain was observed in all the groups with the normal control group (49.11%) having the highest percentage weight gain. The result of the relative prostate weight increased (P<0.05) significantly in the disease control when compared with other treatment groups while the relative testes weight decreased (P<0.05) significantly in disease control groups relative to other treatment groups and normal controlProstatic specific antigen(PSA) level significantly (P<0.05) decreased in the treatment groups compared to the negative control (disease control) with the extract treated exhibiting more effectiveness with dose. The levels of catalase, GSH, GPX and SOD level significantly (P<0.05) . increased in the treatment groups compared with the disease control. The result showed that the extract reduced the prostate weight and the PSA levels of BPH induced rats, thus can be used in the management of BPH. This pharmacological activity of methanol extract of Annona muricata may be attributed to the presence of phytochemical agents observed in the leaves.
