Effect Of Methanol Extract Of Pineapple Peel On Antioxidant Status Of Wist Ar Albino Rats Induced With Diabetes Using Alloxan:- Ijeh Beulah C

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of methanol extract of pineapple peels on antioxidant status of diabetic wistar albino rats. Twenty five animals were randomly distributed into five groups with five animals each. Group A served as the normal control, Group B served as the negative control administered diabetes without treatment, Group C was the positive control, administered diabetes and treated with glibenclamide. Group D and E served as the test groups which received 500 and lOOOmg/kg body weight of extract after diabetes induction. Diabtest was achieved by administering 130mg/kg of alloxan monohydrate intraperitonally. Experimental period lasted for twenty one days, after which animals were sacrificed and liver organ obtained for antioxidant assay. Result for SOD, showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in the lOOOmg/kg group (14.00+2.60) when compared to the negative control (6.95+2.22). Also, There was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in catalase in the negative control (0.67+0.35) when compared to the lOOOmg/kg (1.50+0.44). Result also showed similar trend with glibenclamide. There was a significant (P<0.05) increase in MDA concentration in the negative control when compared to other groups. This shows that the extract ameliorated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation associated with diabetes mellitus.
