Effect of methanol extract of Moringa oleifera and Ocimum gratissimum on protein glycation, liver glycogen and glucose-6-phosphatase activity in nomo-glycemic rat:- Ughelu, Cynthia O.

ABSTRACT

The methanol extracts of Moringa oleifera and Ocimum gratissimum were investigated for their effects on protein glycation. liver glycogen and glucose-6-phosphatase activity using Normo glycemic albino rats. Thirty four male albino rats were used and were randomly assigned into 6 groups; 6 rats in the groups 1-4 and 5 in groups 5 and 6. Group I and 2 rats were administered high and low doses of the Ocimum gratissimum extract respectively, group 3 and 4 rats were administered high and low doses of the Moringa oleifera extract respectively, group 5 was the drug control (metformin) and group 6, the normal control. The rats were sacrificed after 30 days of extract administration and their bloods and organs collected to determine the effect of the extracts on the parameters listed above. Glucose-6-phosphatase activity and protein glycation concentration of the test groups showed no significant difference in relation tn the control group but the high dose of Ocimum gratissimum showed a significance difference from the control group for the liver glycogen estimation. These findings suggest that the plant extracts have no effect on the parameters listed above in a normo-glycemic system and that high dose of Ocimum gratissimum has a lowering effect on liver glycogen concentration in a nomo-lycemic system.
