Effect Of Methanol Extract Of Amaranthus Hybridus And Telfairia Occidentalis Leaves On The Liver Function Parameters Of Aspartame Induced Oxidative Stress In Wistar Albino Rats.:- Uzoh Obianuju P

Abstract xi This study was designed to investigate the effect ofthe methanol extracts ofthe leaves ofAmaranthns hybridus and Telfairia occidentalis on the liver function parameters of Aspartame induced oxidative stress in wistar albino rats. Twenty five (25) rats were divided into five (5) groups A, B, C, D, and E. Each group consisted of five rats, with Group E serving as Normal control fed with standard animal feed only, while Groups A, B, C and D were the test Groups induced with oxidative stress. In addition to standard feed, 300mg/kg of Methanol extract of Amaranthus hybridus leaves (MEAHL) and 300mg/kg of Methanol extract of Telfairia occidentalis leaves extracts (METOL) were administered to groups A and B respectively, then 150mg/kg of MEAHL and 150mg/kg of METOL was administered to Group C for 21 days. The result obtained from this study showed a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the activities of AST, ALT, ALP and a significant increase in the serum levels of TP, GLB, TB and CB, when compared to the Negative control. The serum level ofALB was statistically non significant (P<0.05). The result ofthis study shows that the methanol leaf extract ofAmarantus hybridus and Telfairia occidentalis are hepatoprotective.
