ABSTRACT xii Hydrocotyle bonariensis popularly known as pennywort is of the family of “Araliaceae” of the genus “hydrocotyle”.Recent evidence suggest that hydrocotyle bonariensis possess active phytochemicals could serve as base for phytomedicine. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of hydrocotyle bonariensis on C- reactive protein in Alloxan induced diabetic albino rats. 14 male albino rats weighing 100-200kg were used for this study and divided into 7 groups jGroup 1 (positive control), Group 2 (Negative control), Group [treatment with standard drug (metformin)], Groups 4-7 treatment with leaves extract of hydrocotyle bonariensis at concentration ranging from 1000mg/kg-4000mg/kg. In-vitro antioxidant activity of the leaves of hydrocotyle bonariensis were studied by determining the DPPH Scavenging activity, nitric oxide scavenging activity, anti-lipid peroxidation.Serum C.reactive protein at 6mg/l or higher was determined by the visible agglutination method. The fasting blood glucose level was measured using a glucometer based on glucose oxidase method and the body weight was measured using a weighing balance. At the end of the study, groups 1,3,4-7 showed a negative C-reactive protein result (levels <6mg/l). The In-vitro antioxidant activity ofthe leaves extract showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease at the highest concentration (200mg/l) with percentage inhibitio : 86.56±5.33, 75.20±4.29, 60.73± 3.11 as compared to the standard vitaminC (100mg/l) at 97.68± 0.84, 99.05± 0.24, 98.15±0.29 respectively. With the highest inhibition in DPPH scavenging activity. There was a significant (p>0.05) increase in blood glucose level in Groups 4-7 (293.50±l 1.31) as compared to standard drug (223.50±36.47.)Groups 4-7 weighing 101.25± 1.48-178.65± 7.57 showed a significant (p>0.05) increase: 102.12±0.88-182.28±10.15 in body weight the results showed that Hydrocotyle bonariensis leaves extract was effective in managing C-reactive protein levels (<6mg/l),lead to increased body weight but not reduction of blood glucose levels. It also showed to have active anti oxidant activity. Hydrocotyle bonariensis therefore could contribute to management of complications of diabetes, inflammation characteristics and also prevention of pathological conditions of oxidative stress.
