ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of hydro-ethanolic extract of Amaranthus hybridus leaves on some hematological profile of thioacetamide intoxicated rats (wistar). Thirty-six animals of male gender were used and divided into six groups, each group consisting of six animals. The normal control received normal feed and water, the positive control received the thioacetamide induced water and silymarin (conventional drug), negative control received only thioacetamide, the test groups were treated with lOOmg/kg, 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg body weight of Amaranthus hybridus leaves extract respectively. The administration of the thioacetamide, drug and Amaranthus hybridus leaves extract were orally at single doses per day for nine weeks. The result of the test groups significantly (p < 0.05) increased the hematological levels of PCV, HB, RBC, and WBC when compared to the Negative control groups after nine weeks ofAmaranthus hybridus administration to each rat. The results suggest that thioacetamide induces hepatotoxicity, while Amaranthus hybridus leaves extract appreciably increases the levels ofhematological parameters in the blood.
