ABSTRACT ix Gallic acid and its congeners are commonly present in variety offruits and number of plants. In addition to its natural origin, large number of synthesized gallic acid derivatives are also available. It has a wide range of industrial uses including its role as standardfor determing phenolic content ofanalytes in pharmaceutical industry, as source materialfor ink, paints and colour developer. Studies on gallic acid and its derivatives have exhibited its potential for combating oxidative damages, cancer manifestations and microbial infestations. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect ofgallic acid on hematological profile ofCandida albicans induced candidiasis. Group 1 rats served as the normal control, having access to feed and water ad libitum for a period of 14 days. Group 2 serves as Candida control, Group 3 serves as positive control (Candida + ketoconazole (50mg/kg B.W), Group 4 serves as test control (candida + Gallic acid (500mg/kg B.W) while Group 5 serves as positive control (Candida + ketoconazole (50mg/kg B.W + 500mg/kg). the results The result showed that the group thatreceive ketoconazole had a significant decrease in PCV, Hb and RBC when compared with the group that were administered with gallic acid. In conclusion, treatment with gallic acid had belter hematological indices than ketoconazole group.
