ABSTRACT Aqueous fraction of crude palm oil popularly called Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is a mixture ofwater, oil and natural sediments (solid particles and fibres). In the present study, effect of fresh and fermented aqueous fraction of crude palm oil was examined on lipid profile in wistar albino rats. Forty-five male Wistar albino rats and eighteen male albino mice were purchased from the animal house of the Department of Zoology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The mice were divided into two major groups of nine mice each, that were later divided into three groups of three mice each and used for the phase I and phase II of the acute toxicity study respectively. The rats were divided into five groups with group one having five rats while group two to five contain 10 rats each. Five rats each in group two to five were administered graded doses of fresh and fermented aqueous fraction of crude palm oil respectively. Group one was used as the normal control which received normal saline. The experiment was done for 28 days and no mortality occurred. Feeding with fresh aqueous fraction of crude palm oil led to a significant decrease (p<0.05) in cholesterol concentration, LDL concentration and significant increase (p<0.05) in TAG and HDL levels concentration. Feeding with fermented aqueous fraction of crude palm oil led to a significant increase in cholesterol and LDL levels concentration, significant decrease in TAG and HDL levels concentration. These results indicate the protective potentials of fresh aqueous fraction of crude palm oil against cardiovascular diseases, as well heart diseases.
