ABSTRACT

The albino rats were randomly divided into five groups each consisting offour albino rats Group 1 rats were the normal control and were given feed and water adlibitum for a period of 14 days. Hepatotoxicity was induced invivo in all the rats ofGroups 2’ n 4 5 orally by administermg 1 -5g /kg body weight ofparacetamol. Group 3, 4 and 5 were orally administered Gouania longipetela 200 mg/kg, 600mg/kg and lOOOmg/kg body weight respectively daily for a period of 14 days. Group 2 rats were the negative control and they were not given the extract. The result of this study shows that rats treated with Gouania longipetela extract significantly (P<0.05) have reduced clinically important liver enzymes Oral administratmn ofacetaminophen caused marked liver damage as noted by the significant increased (P<0.05) m activities ofplasma AST, ALT and ALP. Treatment with the extract showed effective hepatoprotection as evidence in the decrease in the plasma levels ofliver biomarker enzymes.
