ABSTRACT x This study is done to determine the effects of butanol extract of Vernonia amygdalina on adiposity indices of female Wister rats fed with high fat diet. Vernonia amygdalina is a known medicinal plant and it has been shown to have serious pharmaceutical properties including antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and antioxidant and anti-cancer effects. Twenty rats were used for the study and grouped into five labeled as Group 1: Control, Group 2: High fat diet, Group 3: High fat diet + low dose VA, Group 4: High fat diet + high dose VA, Group 5: High fat diet + olistart. The initial weight of animals at week 0 was in the order group 4 (147.00) > group 1(144.50) > group 5 (142.00)> group 2 (141.50) > group 3 (140.75). After week 1, the weight changed in the following order: group 5 (172.25) > group 4(159.25) > group 1 (155.75)> group 2 (155.00) > group 3 (153.25). At week 2, the weight changed as follows: group 4 (165.50) > group 5(159.75) > group 3 (158.75) > group 2 (158.50) > group 1 (146.75) at week three, the weight of animals gave: 4 (173.750) > group 2(163.75) > group 5 (161.00)> group 3 (158.25) > group 1 (139.75) at week 4 it gave: group 4 (174.50) > group 3(162.75) > group 2 (160.75)> group 5 (156.50) > group 1 (155.00), and finally at week 5, The result of weight of animals at week 5 was in the order group 4 (188.50) > group 3(181.25±) > group 2 (179.75)> group 5 (173.00) > group 1 (146.75). The naso-anal length was checked and the result showed increase in body weight across the groups but more significant in the high dose group. This is further buttressed by the most increase in naso-anal length increase in the same group. In conclusion, it could be said that high dose Vernonia amygdalina increased body weight and naso-anal length in animal models.
