Dietary Lipid Administration And Changes In Some Antioxidant Levels In Wistar Albino Rats:- Ubah Chinonso L

ABSTRACT . vii This study investigated changes in some antioxidant levels in wistar albino Rats administered dietary lipids (olive oil, soybean oil and margarine) for 21 days. Analysis ofthe following parameters were done superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and malondialdehyde. Sixteen (16) female rats were distributed in four groups. Group 1 (control), group 2 (olive oil), group 3 (soybean oil) and group 4 (margarine). They were fed with vital growers mesh and the different lipids. The results showed that superoxide dismutase increased significantly (p<0.05) in the test group and administered margarine compared to the control group. No significant (p<0.05) difference was observed in the other test groups. Catalase activity increased significantly (p<0.05) in the soybean oil-administered group but showed nonsignificant (p<0.05) increase in the other test groups compared to the control groups. Malondialdehyde concentration was significantly decreased in all the test groups when compared to the control groups. This result confirmed the already established ability ofthese lipids in possessing antioxidant activity.
