Determination Of Classification Rules For Allocating Newly Admitted Candidates Into The Appropriate Course Of Study (A Case Study Of Departments Of Science Laboratory Technology And Statistics, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri.)

ABSTRACT

 This study aimed at determining a classification rule for correctly admitting new candidates into departments of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) and Statistics (STA) of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, on the basis of their Jamb and Post-Jamb scores. The data used for this study were collected from a secondary source. The assumptions underlying a Discriminant Analysis were justified and it was found that the research data satisfied assumptions of multivariate normality and equality of covariance matrices. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis showed that about 32% of the candidates sampled were misclassified .But when the derived classification function was evaluated, it correctly classified about 68% of the candidates under study. Based on the findings of this study, we conclude that a new candidate, denoted by(x0 ), should be allocated to Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), denoted by if the candidate's discriminant score, = SCr,t,ca! (= 5.31). Similarly, a new candidate, denoted by(x0 ), should be allocated to Statistics (STA), denoted by (7r2 ) if the discrirninant scores = ax0
