ABSTRACT Medicinal plants have shown to possess x Medicinal plants have shown to possess some biological constituents that have significant effect in man. This study undertook a comparative study on the antimicrobial activities oftwo herbal mixtures (Goko and Clara bitter cleanser) and the crude extract ofTetrapleura tetraptera (a traditional African food spice). Aqueous and ethanoic extracts of Tetrapleura tetraptera were produced and use alongside the herbal mixtures for antimicrobial activity against four bacterial pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and three fungal pathogens (Aspergillus, Penicillin and Candida albicans). Obtained results show higher extract yield of 18.82% and 19.64% for Clara bitter cleanser and Goko cleanser and 12.46% and 11.96% for the ethanol and water extracts of Tetrapleura tetraptera' respectively. Phytochemical screening results show high presence of alkaloid and flavonoids in the extracts and the mixtures showed moderate presence of Saponin, Tanin, Steroids and glycosides. Antimicrobial activity of the extract was in the range of 10.67mm to 13.67mmandl3.33mm to 15.67mm against the bacteria for aqueous and water extract respectively as against 12.67mm to 16.67mm (Clara cleanser) and 14.00mm to 16.33mm (Goko cleanser). Diameter ofinhibition offungi was higher with ethanol extract ofTetrapleura tetraptera (14.33mm to 16.33mm) as againstl3.00mm (Goko) and 12.67mm (Clara). Comparatively, the ethanol extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera demonstrated higher activity against all three testfungi (Aspergillus, Penicillin and Candida) than Goko and clara bitter cleanser while the herbal mixtures show higher activity against Gram negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Pseudomonas') both showed lower activity against the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus. There were variations in the antimicrobial activities of the plant extracts and the herbal mixtures with relative potencies of 71.29% to 76.56% for the extract, 64.41% to 73.47% for Clara bitter cleanser and 66.09% to 72.31% Goko cleanser. Our results reveal the importance of Tetrapleura tetraptera for medicinal and food uses in local communities and its potential for improving local livelihoods through its domestication
